SUPERIMPOSITIONS

09 Apr 2022 - 25 May 2022

The Alta Arts is pleased to announce the opening of Superimposed, featuring recent and new works by Houston artists Luisa Duarte, Molly Koehn, and Carlos Pozo. Through screen printing, drawing, weaving and more, each artist explores form and layering in their work, pulling inspiration from the architecture around us, from their pasts, and from their imaginations. Artists will be present at the opening reception on Saturday, April 9, 2022 from 12:00 – 4:00 pm. The exhibition will run through May 29th, 2022.

Luisa Duarte’s work is simultaneously minimal and complex. She thoughtfully deconstructs her subjects, often reducing them to a series of shapes, or even honing in on a singular form, reinterpreting with color or texture. The prints included in this exhibition are both screen prints and monotypes – focusing on single forms, giving them texture and object-hood, and contextualizing/positioning them in hinted at environments.

Molly Koehn is a multi-faceted artist, alternating between and often combining weaving, screen printing, drawing and sculpture. Her compositions reveal an intimate experience of the urban environment. Building facades translated into columns and grids of rectangles appear isolated and re-contextualized, speaking to the quiet monumentality of Houston’s glass skyscrapers. They are accompanied by rocks, grass, and cinder blocks, spray-painted orange and highlighter yellow at the edge of construction sites, collected by Koehn during her urban explorations.

Carlos Pozo is a professional architect, musician, and long-time printmaker and digital artist working primarily out of the print shop at Burning Bones Press in Houston’s Heights neighborhood. Pozo’s approach to printmaking vacillates between whimsy and pure formal investigation, highlighting the possibilities of certain shapes while also illustrating invented and ambiguous constructions of his own design. The process of screen printing allows for play, and Pozo often makes varied mono-prints or very small editions, editing and experimenting with different palettes and arrangements along the way.
