The Houston Exchange club was celebrating their first Annual Picnic on the beach in Galveston. There was electric train service from Houston to Galveston. You could travel from one point to another in about an hour. 1928

William P. Hobby airport opened in 1927 to a packed crowd of locals. Initially a 600 acre plot of land with a landing field it was expanded in 1937 to 1240 acres.

Galveston seawall in front of the Galvez Hotel (1911). The Midnight Thunder roller coaster on the middle left was a major tourist attraction. The Rosenburg library (1902) on the upper left, is the oldest continuously operating library in the State of Texas.

Looking across Galveston Island towards the Gulf. Two prominent structures on the upper right are the Galvez (1911) and Buccaneer (1929) hotels. Galveston played an important part of Houston’s early development.
